What is in Wendy’s chili?
Fresh beef, kidney beans, pinto beans, tomato, onions, celery, green chilies and a chili spice blend. Two kinds of bean is unusual for a fast-food chili, and it is where most of the fibre comes from. The recipe has stayed essentially unchanged for decades, which is rare on a menu that has otherwise been reformulated repeatedly.
Wendy’s has long said the chili is made using beef cooked on the grill, part of its fresh-beef kitchen model. That detail is the reason the item exists at all: it gives the kitchen somewhere for beef to go rather than being discarded, which is also why it has survived menu culls that killed other sides.
If you want to reproduce it at home, we have a tested copycat recipe with the ingredient ratios worked out.
How much is Wendy’s chili and what sizes does it come in?
Two cup sizes on the everyday menu, small and large, plus a take-home Family Chili container. The large is the better value on protein: it adds more of protein for roughly under a dollar more.

Is Wendy’s chili healthy?
On protein it is the strongest item Wendy’s sells. A small cup delivers g of protein in calories. Nothing else on the menu matches that, including the Baconator, which carries more total protein but spends three times the calories to get there.
Sodium is the honest caveat. A small cup carries mg, about % of the 2,300mg daily limit the FDA recommends for adults, and the large pushes that to mg. As the centre of a light order it is an excellent choice; ordered alongside fries and a soft drink, the salt adds up faster than most people expect. The only other item that competes on protein per calorie is the Grilled Chicken Ranch Wrap, which is a full meal rather than a side.

What else on the menu is made with the chili?
Three items use the same chili, and the numbers differ more than you would expect. Notably, the Chili & Cheese Baked Potato carries less sodium than a large cup of chili on its own, despite being a bigger portion. A fourth item, the Taco Salad, uses the same chili as its protein base rather than taco-seasoned beef, which is what actually sets it apart from other fast-food taco salads.

Is Wendy’s chili gluten-free or vegetarian?
Gluten
No wheat, barley or rye ingredients, so it is wheat-free by recipe. Wendy’s does not certify it gluten-free and the kitchen shares surfaces, so coeliac guests should weigh the cross-contact risk. Full detail on our gluten-free guide.
Vegetarian
No. It is made with fresh ground beef and there is no meat-free version. The beans mislead a lot of people. See what actually is meat-free on our vegetarian guide.
What should you add to Wendy’s chili?
Shredded cheddar and diced onions are the two standard additions and both are free at most locations if you ask at the counter. Saltine crackers and hot sauce packets come on request too. The onions add almost nothing to the numbers; the cheese adds meaningful calories and sodium, so if you are ordering chili for the protein-per-calorie reason, take the onions and leave the cheese.
As a pairing, chili works better alongside nuggets than alongside fries, because you are already getting the starch from the beans and the fries push the sodium well past a day’s worth. A Jr. Frosty afterwards adds 190 calories, which is the smallest dessert addition on the menu.
Chili questions
Does Wendy's chili have beans?
Yes, two kinds: kidney beans and pinto beans. That is unusual for a fast-food chili and it is where most of the fibre comes from. The beans are also the reason people assume it is vegetarian, which it is not.
How many carbs are in Wendy's chili?
The carbohydrate comes almost entirely from the kidney and pinto beans, which also carry the fibre. A small cup is a moderate-carb order by fast-food standards, well below anything served on a bun, which is why chili is the item most often recommended to people cutting bread rather than calories at Wendy's.
How is Wendy's chili made?
Wendy's has long said the chili is made using beef cooked on the grill, which is part of its fresh-beef, low-waste kitchen model. The beef is simmered with the beans, tomato and spice blend rather than assembled to order, which is why it arrives hot and consistent rather than variable by store.
What toppings can you add to Wendy's chili?
Shredded cheddar and diced onions are the two standard additions, and they are free at most locations if you ask. Saltine crackers and hot sauce packets are also given out on request. Adding cheese pushes the calorie and sodium figures up, so if you are tracking either, take the onions and skip the cheese.
Is Wendy's chili dairy-free?
The chili itself contains no dairy ingredients, so ordered plain it is dairy-free. The shredded cheddar topping obviously is not, and the Chili Cheese Fries and Chili & Cheese Baked Potato both add cheese sauce. If you are avoiding dairy, order the chili on its own and skip the cheese.
How much is the Family Chili at Wendy's?
The take-home Family Chili container averages around fifteen dollars and is designed to feed four to five people. Per serving that works out cheaper than buying individual cups, which makes it the value pick if you are feeding a group rather than yourself.
Does Wendy's chili go on sale?
Chili is not usually part of the standing Biggie Deals tiers, but it appears regularly in the app's rotating offers, particularly in colder months. There is no permanent discount to rely on, so the app is the place to check before ordering.
How many calories are in Wendy's chili cheese fries?
510 calories, with 18g of protein and 1,260mg of sodium. That is more sodium than a large cup of chili on its own, because the cheese sauce and the salted fries both add to it. The Chili & Cheese Baked Potato is the lower-sodium way to get the same combination at 830mg.
Is Wendy's chili good for weight loss?
It is one of the more useful orders here if you are managing calories, because the protein and fibre make a small cup genuinely filling for what it costs you. It is not low-sodium, so it works best as the centre of a light order rather than a side alongside fries and a soft drink.
Does Wendy's chili come with crackers?
Saltine crackers are handed out on request at most locations at no charge, along with hot sauce packets, shredded cheddar and diced onions. None of it is automatic, so ask at the counter or add a note to a mobile order if you want them.
