Wendy’s Fries
The short answer
Wendy’s Natural-Cut Fries are skin-on potatoes fried in a vegetable oil blend and salted with sea salt. Four sizes,. They contain no wheat ingredients but share fryer oil with breaded chicken, so they are not coeliac-safe and Wendy’s does not label them vegan.

What size Wendy’s fries should you order?
Four sizes, and the calorie jump between them is steeper than the price jump. That gap is the single easiest place to trim an order without changing what you eat.
| Size | Price | Cal | Sodium | Protein |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jr. | — | — | — | — |
| Small | — | — | — | — |
| Medium | — | — | — | — |
| Large | — | — | — | — |
The Jr. is the size that comes inside every Biggie Deals tier, which is part of why the bundles look cheaper than ordering the same items separately.
Are Wendy’s fries gluten-free?
The fries themselves contain no wheat, barley or rye ingredients. They are potatoes, oil and salt. But Wendy’s fries them in oil shared with breaded chicken, breaded fish and other coated items, and does not run a dedicated fryer at any U.S. location. That makes them unsafe for anyone with coeliac disease, and Wendy’s does not certify them gluten-free.
Avoiding wheat by preference
Most people in this group eat them without issue, since there is no wheat in the product itself. See the full picture on our gluten-free guide.
Coeliac disease
Avoid. The shared fryer makes cross-contact effectively certain. A small chili or a plain baked potato is the safer side here.
How many calories are in Wendy’s fries?
A medium is calories with mg of sodium, around % of the daily limit for an item most people treat as an afterthought. Protein is negligible at g, which is the honest weakness of fries as a side: they add calories and salt without adding anything that keeps you full.
- Calories—Medium size
- Total fat—From the fryer oil
- Sodium—null% of daily limit
- Protein—Negligible
If protein is what you want from a side, the chili and nuggets both beat fries comfortably. Compare everything on the full nutrition table.
What loaded fries does Wendy’s have?
Three topped versions, and they are genuinely different products rather than the same fries with extras. Baconator Fries and Chili Cheese Fries both carry meaningful protein, which plain fries do not, but both also carry roughly double the sodium of a medium fry.
| Item | Price | Cal | Protein | Sodium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Baconator FriesCheese sauce, shredded cheese, bacon | $4.29 | 530 | — | — |
| Chili Cheese FriesChili and cheese sauce | $4.13 | 510 | — | — |
| Cheese FriesCheese sauce only | $3.63 | 470 | — | — |
What makes Wendy’s fries different?
The cut. Wendy’s leaves the skin on, which is visible at the ends of every fry and is the reason they brown unevenly rather than uniformly. The current formula is a thicker cut with a heavier salt hand than the version the chain ran before 2019, and that change is the thing longtime customers notice most.
They hold their texture for about ten minutes and stay acceptable to twenty. If you want them at their best, ordering unsalted usually gets you a fresh batch, since the standing fries are already salted at the station. It costs you a couple of minutes and gets you fries straight from the fryer.
What should you order fries with?
The fries-in-a-Frosty habit is the pairing Wendy’s promotes itself, and it works because the salt and heat cut against the cold chocolate. A Jr. Frosty is the cheapest way to test it.
Alongside a Baconator, a medium fry pushes the meal past a full day’s sodium, so if you are ordering the heavier sandwiches it is worth dropping to a Jr. Inside a Biggie Bag the fry is already a Jr., which is the cheapest way to get fries as part of a meal.
Fries questions
Are Wendy's fries vegan?
The fries contain no animal ingredients, but Wendy's cooks them in oil shared with breaded chicken and fish and does not operate a dedicated fryer. Because of that, Wendy's does not label them vegan. Vegetarians who accept shared equipment generally eat them; strict vegans generally do not.
What oil does Wendy's use for fries?
A vegetable oil blend, shared across the fryer station with breaded chicken and fish items. That shared oil is the reason the fries fail both the vegan and the coeliac test despite having no animal or wheat ingredients of their own.
What are Wendy's fries made of?
Whole potatoes cut skin-on, fried in a vegetable oil blend and finished with sea salt. The skin-on cut is the visible difference against a standard shoestring fry, and it is why the ends brown unevenly rather than uniformly.
Are Wendy's fries dairy-free?
The plain fries contain no dairy ingredients. The loaded versions all do: Cheese Fries, Chili Cheese Fries and Baconator Fries each add cheese sauce. If you are avoiding dairy, order the fries plain and skip every topped variant.
How much are Baconator Fries?
Baconator Fries are listed here at a little over four dollars, close to the listed price of a large plain fry. For the extra you get cheese sauce, shredded cheese and chopped bacon, plus 14g of protein that plain fries do not carry. Local prices vary.
What is the difference between Baconator Fries and Chili Cheese Fries?
Baconator Fries use cheese sauce, shredded cheese and bacon. Chili Cheese Fries swap the bacon for a scoop of Wendy's chili, which brings more protein and more sodium. Chili Cheese Fries are the heavier of the two on both counts.
Do Wendy's fries come with the combo?
Yes. Every combo includes a fry, and the size scales with the combo you order. Inside the Biggie Deals tiers the fry is a Jr., which is the smallest size Wendy's sells and the reason the bundles look cheaper than ordering separately.
Are Wendy's fries better hot or reheated?
They are built for the first ten minutes, when the skin-on edges are still crisp and the middle is soft. Reheating in an oven or air fryer recovers most of the texture; a microwave does not, because the steam softens the skin that gives them their character.
Can you get fries without salt at Wendy's?
Yes, and asking for unsalted fries usually means a fresh batch, since the standing fries are salted at the station. It takes a couple of minutes longer but the trade is fries straight out of the fryer, which is why regulars order them that way on purpose.
